The budget math, in plain words

50/30/20 rule
= Needs = 50% of take-home pay, wants = 30%, savings = 20%
$4,000 a month: $2,000 for needs, $1,200 for wants and $800 for savings.
Zero-based budget
= Take-home pay βˆ’ every budget = $0
$4,000 βˆ’ $2,000 needs βˆ’ $880 wants βˆ’ $800 savings = $320 still to assign. Give it a job and you're at $0.
Safe to spend today
= (Day-to-day budgets βˆ’ spent so far) Γ· days left in the month
$1,600 of day-to-day budgets and $560 spent by day 12 of 30: ($1,600 βˆ’ $560) Γ· 19 days β‰ˆ $55 a day.
Envelope budgeting
= Envelope left = amount put in βˆ’ spent; an empty envelope means stop
A $240 eating-out envelope with $180 spent: $60 left, $15 a week for the last four weeks.

A planning aid with a 30-day month, not financial advice. Rent, bills and savings are set aside on payday; safe to spend counts your day-to-day budgets only.

Cells that fill as you spend

Each budget is a honeycomb cell that turns orange when it's nearly full and red when it's over, so you see trouble before payday.

Safe to spend, every morning

Repeating bills stay out of it, so the number counts only the money you can still choose to spend this month.

Milestones

A tidy hive, one cell at a time

Getting organized isn't one big weekend with a spreadsheet. It's a few small steps, and Ginkou marks each one as you reach it.

  1. First cell

    1 budget

Pick the category that leaks most and give it a monthly amount. One cell is enough to start seeing where money goes.

    Groceries: $480 a month, about $16 a day

  2. A busy hive

    5 budgets

Five budgets cover most day-to-day spending. From here, safe to spend today is a number you can trust.

$1,240 a month across five cells, about $41 a day

  3. Meticulous

    100 logs

A hundred transactions logged, from statements or three taps. Patterns show up: the Friday takeout, the subscription you forgot.

100 logs, about a month of spending, down to the $4.50 coffee

  4. A month of order

    30 days

Thirty days of checking in. Your budget stops being a plan you made once and becomes how you run your money.

Questions

Budgeting questions, honest answers

What is the 50/30/20 rule?

Split your take-home pay into 50% for needs (rent, bills, groceries, transport), 30% for wants (eating out, shopping, fun) and 20% for savings or extra debt payments. On $4,000 a month that's $2,000, $1,200 and $800. It's a starting point, not a law: in an expensive city needs often run higher.

What is a zero-based budget?

A budget where every unit of income gets a job until nothing is left to assign: income minus all your budgets equals zero. Savings counts as a job, so zero-based doesn't mean spending everything. It means nothing is left floating around unplanned.

What is envelope budgeting?

You put a set amount into an envelope for each category at the start of the month and spend only from it. When an envelope is empty, you stop or move money from another one. Ginkou keeps the envelopes digital, as cells that fill as you spend.

How much can I spend today?

Take what's left in your day-to-day budgets and divide it by the days left in the month, counting today. With $1,040 left and 19 days to go, that's about $55 a day. Rent, bills and savings are set aside first, so they aren't part of it.

Which budgeting method should I use?

Pick the one you'll stick with. 50/30/20 is the quickest to set up, zero-based gives the most control, and envelopes work well if you overspend in a few categories. Whichever you pick, Ginkou keeps it the same way: a monthly amount per category, filling as you spend.

Should I budget my salary or my take-home pay?

Your take-home pay, the amount that actually lands in your account after tax and deductions. Budgeting your gross salary makes every cell look bigger than the money you really have.

Can I budget in more than one currency?

Yes. Each account keeps its own currency, and spending in euros, pounds or anything else lands in the right budget, converted with fresh daily rates. For card payments abroad, log what your bank charged so your budget matches your statement.

Is Ginkou free? Is this financial advice?

It's free, with no ads and no premium tier, and your data stays on your device unless you choose to sync it. It isn't financial advice: Bea helps you see your own numbers and build habits, but for big decisions talk to a licensed professional.
